Our Values

As an Alaskan owned company, we are grounded in the values of the Arctic. Our company was formed with an emphasis on improving the lives of Arctic Communities. Our goal is to make our communities safer and healthier, to grow the potential of every individual and organization…

First above all, we are professional. As Professional Engineers, we take our duty to protect the public’s health, safety, and welfare very seriously. Our reputation in the industry is based on being honest, fair, and ethical in all of our actions and communication with our clients, the public, Contractors, and governmental agencies.

We are focused on our clients. Every project has a unique set of priorities and requirements. Therefore every project approach and solution also has to be tailored specifically to your needs.

We value interdependency and relationships. Our projects are a collaborative effort where we work closely with our clients and project stakeholders, especially Facility Personnel, to tailor design each project specific to your needs and priorities. We work closely with all stakeholders throughout the design, bidding, and construction of projects to ensure the final product exceeds our client’s expectations. We relish the opportunity to listen and learn from others.

We value resiliency. We work closely with Facility Personnel to ensure we provide dependable and maintainable engineering solutions that fit their specific needs and maintenance capabilities. We actively seek, document and communicate Best Practices to reduce long term operational costs of Arctic facilities. We encourage you to read and contribute to our Best Practices to Support O&M (link) document.
We value community. Our target projects are ones that positively impact Arctic communities such as schools, healthcare facilities, and non-profit organizations. We provide pro-bono services

We are focused on the future. We are strong advocates for innovation and the evolution of technology and engineering solutions that will advance the energy resilience of all Arctic Communities. We volunteer hundreds of hours each year providing and facilitating Best Practices training in Arctic design, construction, and maintenance solutions to advance these goals.

We are connected to our environment and the impacts of the changing climate. We actively look to apply energy efficiency and decarbonization solutions where applicable and practicable.

Solution Providers

Craig Fredeen, CCE’s President and Principal Mechanical Engineer works every day to make the Arctic a better place to live. He has over 25 years of mechanical engineering experience providing solutions to unique and challenging projects in some of the most remote and coldest environments in the world…

Craig Fredeen, President
Craig Fredeen, President

Craig has completed projects from Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow), Alaska to the South Pole, Antarctica. He has extensive design experience in HVAC, plumbing, power generation, controls, fuel systems, water treatment, utility distribution, and fire protection systems. Supporting his design work, he’s skilled in inventory and condition surveys, master planning services, energy efficiency studies, construction administration services, commissioning, and construction/warranty inspections. He applies his vast knowledge of codes, design, and industry construction standards to support his clients through third party reviews, Owner’s representation, and design standard development.

Craig believes that design and construction is a team effort. Projects are the most successful when there is collaboration between the Design Team, Owner, Facility Staff, Users, and the Contractors. Craig understands building owners’ desire to reduce building energy usage, maximize efficiency, and minimize maintenance cost, with a focus on lowering long-term operational costs.

He has been the Mechanical Engineer on the Municipality of Anchorage Board of Building Regulations Examiners and Appeals (Building Board) from 2006 through 2024. He has Chaired or been a member of a code-adoption committees for the MOA since the adoption of the 2000 ICC codes.

Craig actively supports his community and design industry through extensive volunteer and pro-bono work annually.

Design Philosophy

We listen. The foundation of CCE’s design philosophy is based on proactive communication and that starts with active listening.

Every project is unique. Every project has its own unique definition of success comprised of a prioritization of first costs, building/systems performance, reliability, long-term operational costs (which includes energy efficiency), and sustainability. We proactively communicate with our clients to review and prioritize each of these categories and then collaboratively develop a solution specific to their need for that specific project. The designs are always based on the needs of the client, not the design team…

Our designs are based on a common-sense application of engineering principles. We are Alaskans. Our company specializes in remote and cold-region projects. That means that we strive for simplicity and dependability.

We are always evolving and learning. We constantly are talking to our engineering peers, Facility Managers, Contractors, and Manufacturers to identify better ways to provide those five elements of success in a project.

We are innovators. The Arctic is changing and we as a profession and an Arctic Community need to change with it. Innovation does not need to be seismic in nature. It can be slight improvements on an already dependable solution or applying proven technology in a different application.
